To all who made my trip possible thank you a thousand times. Spending time in your environment was the most humbling experience ever. I will miss you all.. especially the chimps.

Who you will be volunteering with

The Chimpanzee Volunteer Project here on African soil has made this 1000 hectare game reserve a tranquil venue and a home to chimpanzees that have been misplaced from their natural habitat. The chimpanzee sanctuary has committed itself to the rescue and care take of chimpanzees in need of refuge. Bringing the world of chimpanzees closer to humanity and advancing the power of individuals to improve the environment for all living things.
Besides being provided with a home to live out their lives they are also provided with the necessary attention by you the volunteer to recover from the trauma that they have experienced.

Your involvement

As a volunteer in South Africa you will have a unique opportunity to see Chimpanzees in semi-wild surroundings with normal social interaction and behavioural patterns under group members. The Chimpanzee groups living within these large semi-wild enclosures that are close to their natural habitat and consist of ‘foraging area’s provide the Chimpanzees with behavioural enrichment.

In your first week of volunteering lectures are held every day and include the introduction to this chimpanzee  volunteer project, introduction to primates and the history of chimpanzees, chimpanzee feeding habits and dietary requirements, chimpanzee behaviour, sustainable tourism and environmental education, introduction to primates in captivity and sanctuary management.
After lectures and your introduction to the heroes of the sanctuary the chimp observations begin. These observations are not only for us to conduct an ongoing study of the animals’ improvement, but also for you the volunteer to learn chimpanzee behaviour and each animal individually.
Other daily tasks and optional excursions will fill your volunteering days in Africa and complete your experience.

What you will gain from your experience

The core values to which this volunteer project adhere are: Strive to respect, nourish and protect all living things; people, animals and the environment all inter-connected; That knowledge leads to understanding, and that understanding will encourage us to take action; and that every individual has the ability to make a positive difference; with flexibility and open-mindedness which are essential to enable us to respond to a changing world; and that we require integrity and compassion in all that we do and say.
